In what could prove to be a landmark judgement, the European Union Court of Justice today has ruled that internet service providers will now be obligated to block access to notorious torrent platform The Pirate Bay at the request of copyright holders. The decision states tha, operators ultimately “play an essential role in making those works available” and as such should be held accountable. This is despite the fact that it is independent individuals and not internet providers themselves that place pirated content online. The ruling stems from a previous case originally brought up by anti-piracy advocate BREIN in which the infamous Dutch copyright watchdog attempted to force local internet providers to restrict access…
