The Democratic Republic of Congo is home to the world’s largest source of cobalt, which is used to make lithium-ion batteries that power our smartphones and cars. Sadly, it’s also a country in which children as young as seven years of age mine the mineral which is then sold to Chinese firm Huayou Cobalt for distribution to manufacturers in China and South Korea, according to a report from Amnesty International and DRC-based nonprofit Afrewatch.
