A 21-year-old man in the US, who is credited with being one of the first people in the country to be convicted of stealing cryptocurrency by hacking a victim’s mobile phone, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail. Joel Ortiz, who stole over $7.5 million from at least 40 people, pleaded guilty without contest to 10 felony charges on January 24, 2019. Santa Clara County Judge Edward Lee sentenced Ortiz on Friday, April 19, following a series of hearings in which victims shared the devastation caused by his thefts.
