For the ongoing series, Code Word, we’re exploring if — and how — technology can protect individuals against sexual assault and harassment, and how it can help and support survivors. Over the past year, ride-hailing apps including Uber and Lyft have faced increased scrutiny over worker and rider safety. In October, a House committee officially called on these companies to improve their safety measures over concerns regarding existing background check procedures on drivers, and the way sexual assault and harassment reports were handled.
